PackMaster ("we", "our", or "the app") is a reusable packing-list app: you keep a library of items grouped by trip, and check them off as you pack. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
Information We Collect
The app creates an anonymous account for your device the first time you open it, so your lists can be saved and kept private to you. That account holds no personal details.
If you choose to sign in, we collect:
- Email address — used to identify your account and send magic link sign-in emails.
- Name — only if you sign in with Apple or Google and those services share it. We do not require or display it.
When you use the app, we store:
- Your lists — the trips you create and the items in them, including names, quantities, units, sizes, notes, tags, and anything you type into a custom field.
- App preferences — theme and other settings stored on your device.
We also collect:
- Crash reports — if the app crashes, diagnostic data is sent to Sentry to help us fix bugs. This does not include the contents of your lists. See "Crash Reporting and Approximate Location" below for the one piece of location data this involves.
- Fault and usage events — a small, fixed set of signals about things going wrong in the app, and when the app is opened, updated or installed. See "Fault and Usage Reporting" below for the complete list and what each one contains.
Upgrades and Purchases
If you buy an upgrade, the purchase itself is handled entirely by the App Store or Google Play. We never see or store your payment details, and we do not keep a record of individual transactions.
What we do store, against your account, is:
- Whether your account currently has a paid upgrade — a single yes/no.
- When that upgrade expires, if it is a subscription rather than a one-off purchase.
That is what tells the app to unlock paid features on a new device without asking you to buy them again.
What We Do Not Collect
Stated plainly, because these are easy to assume:
- No advertising identifier. The app never reads your device's advertising ID, and nothing it collects is used for advertising or sold to anyone.
- No tracking of what you pack. The fault and usage events described below carry counts and labels only. The names of your trips, your items, your notes and your custom fields are never part of them.
- No session recording. Nothing records your screen, your taps or your typing.
- No location services. The app never asks for access to your device's location. The one exception is described below, and it comes from the network rather than from your device.
- No notifications, contacts, photos, camera or microphone access.
How We Use Your Information
- To provide the app's core functionality — storing your lists and syncing them to your account.
- To diagnose and fix crashes and bugs.
- To find faults that do not crash the app — the kind where the screen says something worked and it did not.
We do not sell your data. We do not use your data for advertising.
Third-Party Services
- Supabase — our backend database and authentication provider. Your account and list data are stored on Supabase servers. See supabase.com/privacy.
- Google Sign-In — optional sign-in method. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- Apple Sign In — optional sign-in method. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
- PostHog — fault and usage reporting, described below. See posthog.com/privacy.
- Sentry — crash reporting. Sentry derives an approximate location from crash reports — see the section below. See sentry.io/privacy.
Crash Reporting and Approximate Location
When the app sends a crash report, your IP address is not stored on it. Sentry's servers do, however, derive an approximate location from the network the report arrives over — city, region and country — and store that on the crash event.
This is coarse, and it is not GPS. It comes from the network connection, not from your device's location services, which this app never requests. We use it only to tell whether a fault is specific to one region or one build.
Fault and Usage Reporting
Some faults never crash the app. The screen says a thing was deleted and it is still there; a sign-in quietly fails; work queues up and never reaches the server. Nothing reports those, so we send a small fixed set of events to a service called PostHog to tell us when they happen to real people.
This is the complete list. There are no others, and each one is sent only at the moment that thing goes wrong:
- A delete removed nothing.
- Work queued up offline and stopped draining.
- Moving a guest list onto an account failed.
- A sign-in did not complete — with which method was used.
- "Start packing" ran and added nothing.
- A custom field name did not save.
What rides along with them is counts and labels, never content — how many items were involved, how many characters long a name was, which of the three sign-in methods was tried. The app also records when it is installed, updated and opened, and the kind of device it is running on (phone or tablet).
These events are tied to your account, because the question they answer is whether one person is hitting the same fault repeatedly. Before you sign in, the app creates a random identifier for this installation so the same thing can be answered for a guest. It is a random value created by the app, not a hardware or advertising ID, it is tied to nothing outside PackMaster, and it is gone when you uninstall.
PostHog is able to estimate a location from the network a report arrives over, and we have switched that off — so unlike the crash reports described above, these events carry no location at all.
Deleting Your Data
You can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app — see Delete Account for the steps. This removes your trips and items from our servers permanently, and it applies whether or not you ever signed in.
Children
PackMaster is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes
We may update this policy as the app changes. The date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
